India To Become Second Largest Mobile Market

India is poised to overtake the US to become the second largest mobile market in the world behind China, according to the Cellular Operators Association of India and Informa Telecoms & Media as cited by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

As of February 2008, China had 540 million mobile subscribers, while the US had 260 million and India had 251 million.

But while the US is only adding 2 to 3 million subscribers per month, India is adding a whopping 8 to 9 million.

At this pace, India will surpass the US in mobile subscriptions by the first half of April 2008.

China, on the other hand is adding 6 to 7 million subscribers per month.

Additionally, as of February 2008, there were 3.47 million broadband subscribers in India, a 57% increase from 2007.
